Death toll from heavy rains in South Korea rises to 40, nine more missing

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The death toll from heavy rains in the Republic of Korea in recent days has risen to 40 people, while nine more are missing. This was reported by the relevant departments on Monday, according to Xinhua News Agency.

A total of 40 people were found dead in southeastern Gyeongsangbuk-do and central Chungcheong-do, according to the Central Headquarters for Disaster Management and National Security.

Heavy rain warnings have been issued for provinces that have received more than 500mm of rain since last Thursday.

The fate of nine people remains unknown, eight of them are missing in the province of Gyeongsangbuk-do.

The Meteorological Department predicts up to 200 mm more precipitation by the environment in the central and southern regions.

Floods, collapses of houses and landslides have led to an increase in the number of victims across the country.

13 bodies were recovered from vehicles in a flooded underground tunnel in the city of Osong.

A total of 10,765 people from 16 cities and provinces were evacuated due to the devastation caused by the downpours.

The number of incidents involving damage to public facilities was 789, including road damage and destruction, landslides and floods.

352 incidents related to damage to private facilities were also registered - damage and collapse of residential buildings, flooding of vehicles, damage to fishing boats, etc.
