Uzbekistan 28/09/2007 CSTO defence ministers sign about 20 documents on cooperation
About 20 documents were signed on Friday on the results of work of a meeting of the Council of Defence Ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Itar-Tass reported.

The defence ministers of seven CSTO member-countries considered, in particular, a package of documents on the normative and organizational registration within the CSTO framework of a mechanism of peacekeeping activities, including an Agreement on peacekeeping activities, a Provision on collective peacekeeping forces, a Provision on the operational working group for preparing peacekeeping operations and a Provision on the head of the peacekeeping mission.

According to the CSTO secretariat, “it is envisaged that peacekeeping operations can be held on the space of the Organization with the notification of the United Nations.” The participation of CSTO peacekeeping forces beyond the zone of responsibility of the Organization is not ruled out, but it will be possible only at the request of the United Nations.

The Council of Defence Ministers also considered a package of documents on military and economic cooperation, as well as draft documents on military and technical aid to the CSTO member-countries when a threat of aggression or a perpetration of an act of aggression arises.

Upon the conclusion of the meeting, CSTO General Secretary Nikolai Bordyuza presented jubilee breastplates “15 years of the Collective Security Treaty Organization” to the CSTO defence ministers.

The defence ministers of Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Belarus, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and the deputy defence minister of Uzbekistan participated in the meeting.
