CIS Presidents gather in Russia to hold informal summit
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Informal summit of the presidents of the Commonwealth Independent States (CIS) took place in Gorki, suburb of Moscow, Russia, on 8 May 2010.

The summit was attended by the President of Russia Dmitriy Medvedev, President of Armenia Serj Sargsyan, President of Belarus Aleksander Lukashenko, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbaev, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukoich, acting President of Moldavia Mikhai Gimpu, Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyayev, and the CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev.

Opening the meeting, the Russian leader Dmitriy Medvedev said: “I want, first of all, address to all heads of the states, chairman of the government of Uzbekistan and express gratitude for your arrival in Moscow to mark the 65th anniversary of Victory over fascism. This is tribute to memory of our ancestry, who fight together and ensured our common victory.”

“We have our priorities. Priority of the year is to develop scientific cooperation, joint activity in high technologies sphere. We all have task to modernize our economies. They [economies], unfortunately, did not recover fully from economic crisis. We should follow developments in the world carefully. There is different information and there are trends, which pushes us to follow economic situations, including in financial markets, tensely. We will do that. I think, the CIS platform is absolutely right, our finance ministers are meeting regularly to discuss these issues.”

“If talk about humanitarian contacts, of course, it is also important. We had several forums, realized several humanitarian projects. In autumn, Moscow will host the Fifth Forum of creative and scientific intellectuals. In general, the agenda of the day is rich,” he added.

During the summit, the sides discussed wide range of issues related to multilateral cooperation. The sides adopted a joint statement of the CIS leaders to war veterans in connection with the 65th anniversary of the Victory in the World War Two.

The statement said this war will always remain as the most terrible and bloody. “People of our countries suffered a huge loss. The document underlined that huge efforts in front and rare, we defeated opponent and brought freedom to million people,” the statement said.
