Uzbekistan 20/12/2007 CIS observers pleased with preparations for the presidential election in Uzbekistan
"The CIS monitoring mission includes 78 accredited observers," Vitaly Garkun, Senior Assistant Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee and Chief of the CIS Mission, said at a briefing in Tashkent this Tuesday. "The mission compliments the Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan on its dedicated effort in organization of the election."

Garkun said CIS observers had visited polling stations in Tashkent itself and the regions and found them absolutely adequate and fully readied for the forthcoming election. Local electoral commissions have complete sets of legal acts pertaining elections for consulting. Seminars are arranged for functionaries of local electoral commission to aid them in organization of the election.

CIS observers have met with the people in charge of all candidates’ presidential campaigns already.

Uzbekistan will be electing its president on December 23. Four candidates run for president. Islam Karimov, the man who has been running Uzbekistan since 1989, is one of them.
