Central Bank: Cash share in circulation decreased by 3.7 percentage points

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – In the first half of 2024, the share of cash in Uzbekistan’s total money supply decreased, as reflected in the Central Bank’s review on cash circulation.

As of 1 July, the total money supply (M2) amounted to 236 trillion soums, marking an increase of nearly a quarter compared to the previous year.

Simultaneously, currency in circulation (M0) exceeded 50 trillion soums, representing a 6% year-on-year growth.

The share of cash in circulation within the total money supply decreased by 3.7 percentage points, from last year’s 24.8% to the current 21.1%.

During the January-June period, the total amount of cash receipts reached 385 trillion soums, indicating a 30% increase compared to the previous year. The proportion of cash receipts decreased from 62% to 59%, while transactions through terminals increased from 38% to 41%.

The volume of bank cash turnover for the half-year period reached 458 trillion soums, an increase of 24%. Cash receipts exceeded 227 trillion soums, while cash withdrawals amounted to 231 trillion soums. The resulting deficit was covered by the Central Bank through an issuance of 4.1 trillion soums.

The share of bank expenditures on purchasing foreign currency increased from 21% to 23%, reaching an absolute figure of 53.1 trillion soums, a 35% increase.

Additionally, 468 trillion soums were credited to bank cards, marking a 30% increase compared to the first half of last year. Cash withdrawals from bank cards totaled 107 trillion soums, representing 23% of the total amount credited to bank cards.
