Bukhara to host international archaeological conference
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- An international archaeological conference “History and culture of Bukhara oasis in ancient and the Middle Ages” will be held in Bukhara city on 22-23 August 2011, Fund Forum said.

The event is dedicated to the 30th anniversary of archaeological expedition to Paykend in Bukhara and the 20th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s Independence Day.

Fund Forum, Institute of Archaeology of Uzbekistan Science Academy, State Ermitaj (Russia) and Bukhara State Architecture-Art Museum are organizers of the event.

Archeological digs in Paykend site of ancient settlement, located 60 km in southern-western Bukhara, has been started in early 20th century. From early 1980s, scientists from leading museums, including State Ermitaj, Musee du Louvre and others, participated at archeological digs.

Paykend is sometimes named as “Asian Pompei”. The city has been absorbed by desert and it was kept in good condition. Local citizens name Paykend as Shahri Vayron (Ruined City).

It is expected that representatives of Russia, USA, France and others will participate at the conference. Reports on history and art of Bukhara will be presented at the conference.

Important part of the conference will be new exhibition of Bukhara State Architecture-Art Museum dedicated to the history of Paykend. The exhibition is the result of long-term work. The organizers said that the exhibition will be interesting for all. The conference will be “report” for archeological digs at Paykend.
