British ambassador hosts rugby dinner in honour of Uzbekistan’s new rugby federation president
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 14 August the British Ambassador to Uzbekistan, George Edgar O.B.E. hosted a dinner for Senator Sadyk Safaev to mark the Senator’s appointment as the new President of Uzbekistan’s Rugby Federation.

The Ambassador and the Senator talked about all aspects of playing the game of rugby with experts who also attended the dinner. The Ambassador congratulated the Senator on his appointment and wished Uzbekistan well in its rugby future.

The Ambassador noted that rugby union originated in England in the early 19th Century. Rugby has a global reach and is played across the world from South America to Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia.

In 2009 the International Olympic Committee voted to include rugby sevens in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Sevens is a variant of rugby union in which teams are made up of seven players, instead of the usual 15, with shorter matches. Sevens originated in Scotland. It has become increasingly popular as a fast-paced version of the game.
