Begu ousts third seed Cornet to enter quarterfinals at Tashkent Open
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Camelia Begu of Romania upset third seeded and world No 50 Alize Cornet of France, while qualifier Donna Vekic of Croatia made it to her first career quarter final at the 14th edition of Tashkent Open WTA Tennis Championships being played at the Olympic Tennis School in Tashkent.

Second seeded Urszula Radwanska, fifth seeded Alexandra Cadantu of Romania, sixth seeded Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia , seventh seeded Alexandra Panova of Russia, eighth seeded Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan and last year’s finalist here Eva Birnerova were the other players to make it to the last eight stage of the event.

In the second round matches unseeded Romanian Irina Camelia Begu upset the third seeded and 50th ranked French woman Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-1 , Czech Republic’s Eva Birnerova ended the run of Italian giant killer Karin Knapp 6-2, 6-2 , while fifth seeded Romanian Alexandra Cadantu ended the Uzbek challenge edging out wildcard Sabina Sharipova 1-6, 6-3,6-3.

In other matches second seeded Polish player Urszula Radwanska proved too strong for Russian Vitalia Diatchenko winning 6-2, 6-2 , while seventh seeded Russian Alexandra Panova saw off Japanese player Misaki Doi 6-4, 6-4 . In a match that promised excitement eighth seeded Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva scored 6-1, 6-3 win over Russian Anna Chakvetadze to make it to the last eight.

In one of the longest matches of the day sixth seeded Bojana Jovanovski missed three match points in the second set before overcoming a fighting Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-3,6-7(8),6-3. Sixteen year old Croatian Donna Vekic made it to her first ever WTA tour quarterfinals outplaying Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino 6-2 6-2.

Top seeded Romanian pair Irina –Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu managed to scrape past Ukrainians Valentyna Ivakhnenko and Kateryna Kozlova 6-3, 4-6, 12-10 after being 5 match points down to make it to the semifinal stage in the doubles.
