Aussies won't repeat 2007 mistakes: Sasa
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Australia centre-back and Asian player of the year Sasa Ognenovski says his team will not repeat the mistakes of their 2007 AFC Asian Cup campaign, as they prepare to face Uzbekistan in the semi-finals.

Chasing a first ever major international trophy, Australia are the top-ranked team in the competition and sit 82 places above the Uzbeks in the current FIFA world ranking.

Ognenovski, however, has not forgotten Australia's quarter-final exit at the hands of Japan on their competition debut in 2007, and says the Socceroos will not allow themselves to make the same mistake twice.

"A lot of the boys were involved in the last campaign -- Australia came in as hot favourites and ended up out of the competition," Ognenovski told reporters ahead of the semi-final on Tuesday evening.

"In Asia there are no real favourites. Anyone can beat anyone on their day, so we're going to be 100 percent concentrated and make sure we can get past Uzbekistan."

Uzbekistan, like Australia, are appearing in the semi-finals at the AFC Asian Cup for the first time. They finished top of Group A ahead of hosts Qatar, China and Kuwait, before edging Jordan 2-1 in the last eight.

Some of the tournament's most eye-catching goals have also stemmed from Uzbek feet and Ognenovski says the long-range shooting prowess of players like Odil Akhmedov and Alexander Geynrikh makes them a dangerous prospect.

"They're a good team. They've scored a lot of goals. They've conceded a few too," said the 31-year-old defender, who captained Korean side Seongnam Ilhwa to AFC Champions League glory in 2010.

"Even if they're playing badly, when you're scoring goals from 40 yards, 30 yards, it can lift the team. So hopefully they don't get any against us."
