Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — An attempt to illegally export 400 turtles was prevented at the "Farkhod" customs post in the Tashkent region, according to the regional press service of the Customs Committee.

Customs officers detained two individuals attempting to cross the border on foot. Upon inspection, 153 turtles were found in their luggage, without any accompanying documentation.

Additionally, during an inspection of a vehicle parked near the customs post, another 247 turtles were discovered in the trunk and back seat, packed in four boxes.

It’s important to note that these turtles are listed in the Red Book, as their population is under threat of extinction.

All 400 turtles have been temporarily transferred to the Bekabad City Ecology Department. They are expected to be released back into their natural habitat in the future.

Customs authorities are currently conducting investigations regarding the incident.
