Arbitration judges gather to discuss further development issues
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 18-20 August 2009, arbitration judges from all regions of Uzbekistan will attend summer school on the theme: “Actual issues of arbitration proceeding in Uzbekistan. Introduction to commercial mediation” in the recreation zone “Charvak Oromgohi” situated in Bostanliq area, Tashkent region.

Alternative methods of dispute resolution are considered to be one of the most perspective ways of economic disputes settlement. Interest to arbitration proceedings grows due to its advantages comparing to state courts such as low cost, possibility to select arbitrators, confidentiality and simplified procedures. These factors may explain the growing number of applications to arbitration courts.

Republic of Uzbekistan has taken specific measures during past years on introduction and popularization of the alternative methods of dispute resolution. First step in this direction was joining by the Republic of Uzbekistan of the convention «On settlement of investment disputes between states and foreign parties” and convention “On recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards”. Next important step was the elaboration and adoption of the law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On arbitration courts” in 2007.

With the aim to discuss actual issues of arbitration proceedings, improve professionals qualifications of arbitration judges and learn international experience, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan, Arbitration development center in cooperation with UNDP «Business Forum of Uzbekistan» project are organizing summer school for arbitration judges from all regions of Uzbekistan. Public attestation of arbitration judges will take place during the summer school.

During the event organizers plan to familiarize arbitration judges with current state of arbitration courts development in Uzbekistan, progress and challenges faced, discuss issues related to state enterprises participation in arbitration proceedings, role of PR campaigns and effective use of ICT in the arbitration courts activity. In addition, participants are going to discuss development of commercial mediation, which aims to find mutually beneficial solutions to both parties in conflict situations arising in entrepreneurial activity.

Participation of government officials, public organizations and international institutions are expected. In particular, representatives of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis, Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Supreme Economic Court and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan will address issues related to current state of arbitration proceedings in Uzbekistan and recent changes in the legislation in the area of alternative dispute resolution. In order to familiarize arbitration judges with the experience of other countries, international experts from Siberian Arbitration court (Russian Federation) and Kazakh International Arbitration (Kazakhstan) will make presentations.

Organizers expect that the summer school will help to enhance professional skills and practical knowledge of arbitration judges, improve legislative base and define organizational measures for further development of arbitration proceedings and other alternative dispute resolution methods in Uzbekistan.
