Uzbekistan 01/01/2008 Another quake in southern Kyrgyzstan

The magnitude-5.7 quake occurred just after noon, and its epicenter was 15 miles southeast of Osh, the Central Asian nation’s second-largest city, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Residents of Osh also felt tremors from a 5.0-magnitude earthquake late Monday in neighboring Uzbekistan, and many took to the streets after the New Year’s Day quake, fearing further temblors, one resident, Almaz Ismanov, said by telephone. He said cracks formed in walls in the upper stories of some older buildings in the city.

Earthquakes are fairly common in the mountains of the former Soviet republics of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. A 5.3-magnitude quake centered near Osh on Dec. 26 caused no known casualties.
