Andreas Haider-Maurer topples top seed Schuettler out of Tashkent Challenger
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Eighth seeded Andreas Haider-Maurer created the biggest upset of the event when he toppled top seeded and world no 83rd ranked Rainer Schuettler of Germany,to enter the semifinals of the US$125,000 Tashkent Challenger, an ATP Challenger series event being played at the Olympic tennis Stadium.

Fourth seeded Dustin Brown of Jamaica, Fifth seeded Karl Beck of Slovakia and seventh seeded Gilles Muller of Luxemburg were the others to make it to the semifinals of the singles event.

The 23 year old Maurer from Zwettl in Austria played a superb all round game to upset the former world No 5 and top seeded Schuettler 2-6,6-3,7-5 in 2hours , Muller stopped the winning run of local star Farrukh Dustov 6- 3,1-6,6-3 in 1 hour and 33 mins.

Temperamental player fourth seeded Dustin Brown cheered by a large crowd went through close moments before overcoming unseeded Belarusian Uladimir Ignatik 7-5,6-7(1),6-4 in 1hour and 54 minutes while Fifth seeded and 127th ranked Karl Beck of Slovakia did not have to sweat much as Canadian Milos Raonic retired with the scores reading 6-3,1-0.

In the semifinals tomorrow, Haider-Maurer will take on Gilles Muller, while Brown will take on Beck.

In the best match of the day Andreas Maurer was broken in the 5th and the7th games by Schuettler who showed his class on courts with some extraordinary shots on both flanks, Schuettler won the set 6-3 with ease.

In the second set Maurer seemed to have found his rhythm on the serve and his ground strokes and matched the much experienced Schuettler, the young Austrian suddenly raised his game higher attacking at every opportunity to break the top seeded German in the eighth game in the second set and then hold on win 6-3 thus leveling set scores.

In the third set which went to be thriller, both players displayed tremendous tennis skills, with Haider- Maurer serving as many a seven aces in the set, Schuettler now 34 years of age looked a little bit jaded towards the end. Maurer broke Schuettler in the 11th game after the experienced German cracked a served a double fault at the break point.

In the 12 game Haider -Maurer served nervously even serving a two double faults , but then made up with three good serves to wrap the match and enter the first semifinal of a challenger, Haider - Maurer served up 13 aces in the match.

"I'm thrilled to have upset the topseed here , I played much better on the bigger points said" , Andreas after his match.

In other keenly contested tussle maverick player and fourth seeded Dustin Brown went through anxious moments before overcoming Uladzimir Ignatik of Belarus 7-5, 6-7(1) , 6-4 in a match that witnessed as many as 31 aces from both the players.

In the first set Brown broke the 20 year old Belarusian Ignatik in the 12th game , In the second set both players served admirably to hold on to their service game and force a tie break, some erratic play from Brown saw him win just 1 point in the tiebreak and force the match into the decider.

Brown broke Ignatik in the very first game after 5 deuces to take a 1-0 lead and from then held on to his service game and wrapped the match 6-4 in the third.

In the doubles Semi Finals third seeded Slovakian pair of Karl Beck and Filip Polasek upset the top seeded pair of Dustin Brown and Rogier Wassen of Nederland's 6-4,6-2 , they will take on the second seeded British pair of Ross Hutchins and Jamie Murray who put out Treat Conrad Huey of Philippines and Dominic Inglot of Britain 7-6(3),6-4 in the finals tomorrow
