Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The thirteenth session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is being held in Abu Dhabi (UAE) from 13 to 15 January.

Heads of states, members of governments, heads of international and regional organizations, public and private organizations and representatives of civil society take part in the session.

The participants of the IRENA Assembly will consider the issues of developing renewable energy sources, accelerating the energy transition and financing projects to create new generating capacities.

During the opening of the Assembly, the importance of conducting a global inventory to identify problems and opportunities for the implementation of the Paris Agreements was noted.

The participants of the event noted that in order to reduce emissions into the atmosphere, all countries should become partners, not competitors. Only the cooperation of countries will mitigate climate change.

The importance of creating mechanisms for financing projects for the production of clean energy was noted. At the same time, rich countries should not make profit at the expense of poor countries.

“Even though the energy transition is happening all over the world,” said IRENA CEO Francesco La Camera, “there is a need to speed up efforts while ensuring that the benefits are shared evenly across countries and communities. International cooperation will play a vital role in ensuring that all countries are able to accelerate the deployment of climate resilient technologies and secure the necessary investments to achieve their goals. Membership in IRENA offers a unique platform to advance the global energy agenda at COP28 and beyond.”

According to IRENA, installed renewable energy capacity must triple every year until 2030 to meet the targets set in Paris. This can be achieved through wind and solar energy, as well as hydrogen and ammonia technologies, said Francesco La Camera.

“If we want to avert a climate catastrophe, renewable energy is the only sustainable way forward. Today, their share in world electricity production is about 30 percent. By 2030, this figure should rise to 60 percent, and by 2050 to 90 percent. And it is possible if we act now,” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said in a video message.

He called for removing international patent barriers for renewable technologies, increasing access to materials and components for renewable technologies, switching subsidies from fossil fuels to clean energy, and increasing private investment in renewable energy by US$4 trillion a year.

Last year, 81% of all installed new energy capacity came from renewable energy sources.

The IRENA Assembly is held as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW). ADSW is hosted by Masdar.
