ADB to issue loan to Uzbekistan’s solid waste management project
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Government of Uzbekistan is planning to attract loan of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at the size of US$400 million to modernize solid waste management system.

The ADB already allocated US$700,000 to development of the project. It is expected that the project will The proposed Project will support sustainable urban development in Uzbekistan by modernizing SWM to provide continuous and reliable municipal services for up to 8 million urban and peri-urban residents by 2022: promoting financial sustainability of municipal services through tariff rationalization and prudent financial management; supporting policy and institutional reforms for improved sanitation and environmental management; mitigating climate change through a major reduction of GHG emissions, and through compliance with international standards on waste minimization and material recycling; and through all these measures improving livability of cities.

The project cost is US$480 million. The ADB will allocate US$300 million due to ordinary capital resources of the bank and US$100 million due to Asian Development Fund. The Government will issue US$80 million to project implementation.

The project will cover Tashkent city and eight cities of Uzbekistan – Samarkand, Bukhara, Andijan, Khorezm, Navoi, Namangan, Qoqand and Gulistan.

Within the project it is planned to construct new waste collection points, update waste collecting vehicles and equipment, as well as introduce modern waste processing systems in above mentioned areas.

According to official data, some 35 million tonnes of domestic waste is formed in Uzbekistan annually.
