Abramov hopes Uzbeks can make history
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Coach Vadim Abramov hopes Uzbekistan can create history when they face Jordan in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011 quarter-finals at Khalifa Stadium on Friday.

Since making their bow at Asia's premier tournament in 1996, Uzbekistan have never progressed beyond the last eight but Abramov believes they have never had a better chance to alter that record.

“It's a very important game,” he said.

“Previously, the story of Uzbekistan is that the team has twice reached the quarter-finals but never the semis. This a good chance to reach the semi-finals because this team can play. I firmly believe this.”

Uzbekistan have impressed so far in Doha, topping Group A with victories over hosts Qatar and Kuwait before sharing an entertaining 2-2 draw against China that sealed their passage into the knockout stage.

Jordan, by contrast, are unexpected quarter-finalists having emerged runners-up from Group B following Saudi Arabia's disappointing campaign.

While Abramov feels that their opponents have at times enjoyed the rub of the green, he stressed their results mean they should not be underestimated.

“It will be a hard game, now there are eight teams left, our goal is the semi-finals and who is better we will see after game,” he added.

“Before this tournament, we played a friendly against Jordan and we drew 2-2 (in Sharjah). They are a good team, a dangerous team, they can play football but also they are a lucky team.

“We should be wary, they have no chances to score but every time they score. They maybe get some help from upstairs, I don't know.

“Yes, they've been lucky but they haven't lost in three games, they came through a strong group, they didn't lose to Japan, Saudi Arabia or Syria.

“This is football, who decides that the Saudis are better than Jordan? On the field they beat them 1-0, so who is better will be decided on the pitch.”

Abramov also revealed he has a full-strength squad to pick from but hopes his side are not taken to extra time on Friday.

“Everybody in my team can play. Everything is okay, no injuries, no suspensions,” he said.

“Jordan will maybe change their tactics, I don't know. Both teams have played three hard games but who is better, we don't know now. All the teams are tired, all teams are in the same situation and I hope it's over in 90 minutes. Penalties are a lottery.

“We'll try to make our supporters happy. This is a stage where you cannot make any mistakes so we will have to be disciplined.”
