Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Several strong aftershocks were recorded 30 km from the city of Herat. Just last week, an earthquake in the same area killed more than two thousand people, DW reports.

In Afghanistan, a strong earthquake occurred again in Herat province. American seismologists recorded tremors of magnitude 6.3 on Sunday, 15 October, at 6.36 Moscow time about 30 km from the city of Herat in the province of the same name.

In this region, only a week ago, several powerful tremors occurred, as a result of which, according to local authorities, more than two thousand people were killed. According to official data, a total of 2,053 people were killed in 13 villages at that time, and another 9240 were injured. Rescue work in the disaster area continues.

According to American seismologists, the earthquake a week ago also had a magnitude of 6.3. Its epicenter was located 40 km northwest of Herat, the largest city in the region. Local authorities subsequently reported eight repeated tremors with a force of 4.3 to 6.3. 

More than 90 percent of all the dead are women and children, the UN Children’s Fund reported on October 11. According to the world Organization, more than 12 thousand people were affected by the earthquakes in Herat.
