Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- More than 12,000 police will be on hand to watch public order during the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Yekaterinburg next year, regional public security chief Valentin Kuzmin told a news conference at the Itar-Tass office on Thursday.

"Of those, 7,000 police will be assigned from other towns," Kuzmin said.

At present, law-enforcement authorities are settling the issues of accommodation and provision of meals for visiting police officers. "Using a well-honed practice, we’re holding consultations and settling the issue of coordination with representatives of law-enforcement bodies of the SCO members," he noted.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a subregional international organization comprising six states: Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Mongolia, India, Iran and Pakistan have been granted the observe status.

At the SCO summit in Dushanbe on 28 August 2008, the SCO leaders adopted a joint communique on Russia’s taking over SCO chairmanship next year. The next summit is due in Yekaterinburg in June 2009.
