Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 22 October 2020, the National Chamber of Innovative Healthcare of the Republic of Uzbekistan held an online discussion on the implementation of a project for training medical specialists in accordance with Canadian standards at the Medical Institute of Karakalpakstan.
The trilateral online meeting was attended by the heads and specialists of the National Chamber, the Medical Institute of Karakalpakstan, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Welcoming the participants, the chairman of the National Chamber of Innovative Healthcare Rovshan Izamov stressed that the introduction of the best world models and standards into the training process of healthcare professionals in Uzbekistan is one of the tasks set by the country’s leadership for the National Chamber.
In turn, the rector of the Medical Institute of Karakalpakstan Aral Ataniyazova and the regional director of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Karim Kayumi, during the video conference, noted the readiness of the parties to implement this project with the support of the National Chamber.
Dr. Lynn Sonnenberg made a presentation on the Canadian medical education system from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The educational system of Canada includes pre-university medical education, which lasts 3-4 years and is comparable to training in a medical college or lyceum, higher medical education - 3-4 years and postgraduate medical education PGME (Residency) - 5-6 years for specialists and 2-3 years for narrow specialists. Further, health professionals improve their qualifications already in the process of work, that is, they follow the principle of continuous medical education.
The Uzbek-Canadian project provides precisely the stage of postgraduate medical education, the successful completion of which makes it possible to apply for work in Canada and countries in which the Canadian system of medical education is recognized.
The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is one of the world’s recognized leaders in specialized medical education and nursing, setting the standard for special medical education and training over a long period of time, now the standard for nearly 70 medical specialties.
Training is conducted under the CBME system, an accredited competency-based medical education that is used around the world, including the USA, Australia and Europe.
Not only training, but the evaluation of Canadian postgraduate physicians throughout their career is at the heart of the success and international reputation of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Residency Health Professionals. This provides clinicians with the skills and behaviors necessary to continually meet the changing needs of patients, thus serving as the foundation for continual improvement in patient care.
By introducing these standards in Uzbekistan, the country’s healthcare will gain experience of working with one of the recognized international systems of medical education and will be able to directly assess the level of specialists who have received postgraduate medical education according to the Canadian model.
Work on the implementation of this project continues.
